Honestly, off the top of my head, not many lessons come to mind. Stuff like treating your neighbor with respect is one that I can think of that I would be able to learn outside of church.

But trane, do you celebrate Christmas? Easter?
i celebrate family, and i am from a culturally protestant family. my mom was in a church as a young woman, and so there is a lineage of observing family holidays. we have a tree and we exchange presents, but there is most certainly no god in christmas for my family. i definitely don't celebrate easter. it's a celebration of death.

this whole nonsense about religion informing morality really grinds my gears. treating your neighbour with respect is about humanism as much as anything else. how about excluding women from leadership roles? is that an important christian life lesson, or can we pick and choose what we like out of the 'holy scriptures'?

bah.

If you refuse to go to church to learn about Jesus, why do you celebrate his holidays?

Okay well that wasn't a great example. I wish I could think of a better one off the top of my head, but it has been a very long day lol.

Anyway, I have been going to church since I can remember. Do I live my life by the way the Bible tells me to all the time? Nope. Am I proud of it? Not at all. Which is why each Sunday morning I get dressed up and I go to church with my family so I can confess my sins. Maybe there isn't a God, I don't know. But I do know that it feels good to be able to go somewhere and apologize for the questionable things I have done over the past week.

BTW, Easter is not a celebration of death, but a celebration of the resurrection of Christ.

why do you feel you need to apologize? who is the priest or minister to tell you what is right and wrong?

i understand what you think easter is about. there are many reasons that i disagree, most prominently that i don't think that there has ever been any evidence that resurrection has ever taken place for any living thing in the way that the bible thinks of it. it is the celebration of a dead man and a shared delusion.

Some of the biggest assholes i know go to church all the time. It seems some people go to church "in case" there is a heaven and hope that gets them a ticket through the pearly gates.

I don't know, I guess it's just that satisfaction of getting everything off your chest and starting a clean slate sorta thing. Have you never felt the urge to just tell someone about something that you've done that you can't tell anyone else?

But I'm not going to try and turn you into a religious character here, nor am I trying to. In all honestly, if we were to debate this topic, a wise man like you would most likely come out on top. To each one is his own opinion I guess,

Thats the problem. Most people think that they can just sit through an hour sermon each week and expect to live for eternity in heaven. Not true. At all.

not to mention the church always begs for money when you go even though thats against the bible so church basically contradicts itself
