Exclamation 8.9 magnitude earthquake hits Japan

Tsunami hits Japan after 8.8 magnitude earthquake - Telegraph

Quote:
The Japanese public broadcaster NHK showed cars, trucks, houses and buildings being swept away by tsunami in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture. Black smoke was seen billowing from a building in Odaiba, a Tokyo suburb, and bullet trains to the north of the country were halted.

Television showed cars bobbing in water along side fishing boats. A 50 cm tsunami hit Japan's northern coast.

"The building shook for what seemed a long time and many people in the newsroom grabbed their helmets and some got under their desks," Reuters correspondent Linda Sieg said.

"It was probably the worst I have felt since I came to Japan more than 20 years ago."

US officials said the 8.8-magnitude quake struck about 250 miles (400km) from Tokyo at a depth of 20 miles. The stock market extended its losses after the quake was announced.

Japan's northeast Pacific coast, called Sanriku, has suffered from quakes and tsunamis in the past and a 7.2 quake struck on Wednesday. In 1933, a magnitude 8.1 quake in the area killed more than 3,000 people. Last year fishing facilities were damaged after by a tsunami caused by a strong tremor in Chile.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

A tsunami warning was in effect for Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and US state of Hawaii.

BBC News - Japan hit by large earthquake

Apparently the Tsunami could touch the U.S. West coast by 8:00am! Thats how strong the quake was! Scary.

Scary, I was originally supposed to go to Japan this month but decided to go in May instead. Just heard from my friends over there and thankfully they're ok.

Still watching CNN and they said that a Tsunami warning is in effect for the entire west coast of the US and Canada. Wow. Hard to believe CNN.

The warning that they have for the west coast of Canada and the US is nowhere near the magnitude of Japaran's, of course... but still. Worth being warned and proactive.

Maybe Im mistaken, but how high a wave is doesnt matter in a tsunami, whats makes the damage is that all that water goes into land without stop. Like a huge flood.

I believe the wave that hit the coast of Japan was 0.5 m.

Thoughts and prayers with the Japanese people ...

No doubt, but the fact that the west coast got warnings just tells you how massive the earthquake was.

now they are saying that they are having trouble with a nuclear plant...something about not having enough electricity to cool it

Quote:
(Reuters) - Japan said on Friday a cooling function at Tokyo Electric Power's (9501.T) Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was not working after a major earthquake but that it was trying to get backup power for cooling.

The government has declared an emergency situation as a precaution but there was no radioactive leakage and no damage from the cooling problem was expected at this stage, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told a news conference. (Reporting by Chisa Fujioka and Risa Maeda; Editing by Edwina Gibbs)

Won't load for me. Can you summarize the argument?

Yes, I've heard of HAARP, but I'm also familiar with critical thinking.

As U.S. damage measured, emergency declared in California counties - CNN.com

It's amazing that someone could be killed so far away from the hypocenter. I believe there were warnings to stay off all of the beaches on the west coast. This poor guy, who, for whatever reason, so desperately wanted a photo, swept off to sea and, ultimately, death.
