Default 10 shot, killed in south Ala. towns; shooter dead

Quote:
SAMSON, Ala. – A gunman on a terrifying rampage across two southern Alabama counties killed at least nine people Tuesday, including members of his own family and apparent strangers, and burned down his mother's home before shooting himself at a metals plant, authorities said.

Police were investigating shootings in at least four different locations in several communities, all of which were believed to be the work of a single gunman who had not yet been identified by investigators.

The afternoon of bloodshed began in Kinston, near the Alabama-Florida border, where the shooter burned down his mother's house, according to the Coffee County coroner, Robert Preachers. Officials located the woman's body inside the house, but they had not been able to get inside the still-burning house to determine if he shot her first.

The gunman then headed east, into Geneva County, where he shot and killed five people — four adults and a child — at a home in the nearby town of Samson. Then he killed one person each in two other homes. The identities of all the victims were unknown, but Preachers said they included other members of the shooter's family.

"He started in his mother's house," Preachers said. "Then he went to Samson and he killed his granny and granddaddy and aunt and uncle."

"We don't know what triggered it," Preachers added.

The gunman also shot at a state trooper's car, striking the vehicle seven times and wounding the trooper with broken glass.

He then killed someone at a Samson supply store, and another person at a service station.

Samson contractor Greg McCullough said he was pumping gas at the station when the gunman opened fire, killing a woman coming out of the service station and wounding McCullough in the shoulder and arm with bullet fragments that struck his truck and the pump.

I'm very happy to live in this country and not in the U.S. With constant shooting sprees (such as this one), priests getting killed in church, school massacres on an almost yearly basis, or kids getting killed as their parents are cleaning the guns they own. No thanks, Canada's not perfect by any stretch but it suites me just fine. Let them cling to their 2nd amendment, while people who shouldn't be anywhere near a gun get them with amazing ease!

I was just watching CNN and they were interviewing a man in Alabama who's daughter was shot. And he says "i don't know how something like this can happen". Is this guy kidding? I know he's upset, but wake up people. If this guy was asked about guns in America, he'd probably say nothing needs to change. Why, because their for fathers wanted everyone to be able to carry a gun, hundreds of years ago when they could not have forseen this type of bullshit going on with such frequency.Pathetic.

Thats some crazy shit, but not to be unexpected, due to the poor economy people are losing their jobs, homes, entire lifestyle and their minds. You've got to imagine that theres going to be plenty of these kind of incidents with all the guns down there.
Not that people go on killing sprees but here in Vancouver i've seen a gang shooting on the news almost every day for the past 2 or 3 months, there was even one in the restaurant round the corner from my place, an i live in one of the nicer areas of town. So maybe Canadas not as nice an safe as you would like to believe

Given all the guns, yeah true. But they were gun crazy way before the economy started going south.

I personally don't think the US is anymore gun happy than many other countries around the world. The big difference is the population alone compared to countries like Canada and Germany. We're 30 so million and Germany probably 60 to 70 million while the US is over 300 million. So if it was broken down per capita I bet we're really not any more "trigger" happy than the Americans are.

Look at cities in the U.S that are the same size as our biggest cities (ie:Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal....)

Take a good look at the murder rate and shootings. In all honesty their crime rates have gone down in recent years. But murders in a city the size of toronto in the U.S is approx. 6 times higher then here. And most of those murders include guns. Nobody will convince me that americans aren't gun happy. There are guns/shootings in every country but it is extremely prevelent in the U.S.

I do think, or remember reading a stat somewhere, that on a per capita basis the U.S. has the highest number of gun related crimes in the "Western" World. I'll try to find a source somewhere.

I've long believed though that guns have no place in our society any longer. The 2nd ammendment was created in response to the British threat at the time and was really a response to war time conditions. Who is threatening every day Americans today? Anyone? It's an outdated law.

Couldn't agree more. When it was created, if they thought for a second that this much shit would be going on they probably would have thought twice or worded it differently.I highly doubt they wanted kids carrying guns like it was an accessory to an outfit.

Also it's interesting to note that most gun related crimes are committed by men and most NRA members or gun supporters are men as well.

It's an interesting sociological take on it and I've always believed that guns are a way to further demonstrate male dominance on others. Anyways....carry on.
