the catholic church also endorsed horthy's right-wing coup in hungary, as well as fascistic movements in slovakia and austria.

hitler's very first diplomatic accord (july 1933) was a pact with the vatican. in return for complete control over children's education in germany, the catholic church urged its congregation to abstain from any political activity that the nazi regime deemed off limits. parish records were handed over to the nazis following this pact as a means of determining aryan lineage.

the catholic church also ordered an annual celebration on hitler's birthday as of 1939, accompanied by the pope sending hitler his warm birthday wishes and prayers. pius xii is well known as a nazi sympathizer, although this is being denied by catholic apologists.

i could go on and on about the rat line and south america or many ofther situations that the church was in bed with fascistic movements...

I'm not doubting the overall past of pope. However; to put a Swatztika on top of the CURRENT pope just raises way too many eyebrows IMHO.

I'll be the last to get offended within political events but to clearly shows a pic of something of the past and depict it with something of present time really is a huge stretch IMHO

When I saw a user post Dick Cheney, and then another user consider posting Obama, I thought this was about having a laugh, not historical accuracy. In fact, I find it funny that Benzo was okay with Obama or Cheney being called a dictator, but not the Pope being called a Nazi. Seriously, calling Obama or Cheney a dictator is revisionist history, so that objection is kind of weak. I'm not trying to be an asshole here, I just really find it funny how standards are always different for people like the Pope.

I'll take the avatar down.

Ya know we were all having a little fun....does that fact that I have Pol Pot, mean I think he is a great human being.....no.

Its not going to be a free for all though, I'm sure the Catholic church can be tied to the Nazi movement, we are just not going to do it here.

Got it? good.

I get what your saying trying to lighten up the place. I dunno most things really dont' bother me but when tying something in an open forum which represents Raptor Fans I wouldn't want an outsider see a pic of the current pope with a nazi symbol on top. Thats how I view it.

I guess once ur a moderator you always think like one.

I agree DVS...no problem with using a picture of the POPE and calling him a dictator, I would still have a problem if you used Obama or Cheney with a swastika.

That's a slightly better argument. I understand that people who haven't visited this thread might see the avatar and go "WTF?", so I won't pose any objections to taking it down (not that it would matter if I objected, since I am new and have no rights). However, they are going to see avatar's of dictators and will probably still go "WTF?".

Seriously, though, you were way to quick to accuse me of revisionist history, even if I was playing on the whole revisionist history thing in order to get a laugh. Trane already made a great post on this issue, but I could add more. When I was an undergraduate, I wrote a paper on the Catholic Church and the Holocaust. This is a touchy subject. I don't think the Church could have possibly saved all the Jews; I'm definitely not saying that, but there are some things the Church should not be proud of, given that the Pope is supposedly a moral leader. To be fair, Allied governments, including the Canadian and American ones, have a lot to be ashamed of as well. But nobody ever gets mad at me when I bring up political leaders, yet they always flip their lid over the Pope and the Church.

One thing I can't do is bother. Here I have a pic of a Facist Leader and now we are talking about the morality of and truth about History and Governments. I had a feeling this would happen and I'm not going to be walking on eggshells doing so. I'm taking off my avatar and just not even answering you anymore. For a guy that goes from Silly to Serious how should I really respond to you anyways.

Well, I am not trying to piss you off, so don't bother responding. I just like to clarify things. I was trying to assure you that I was not a revisionist kook, but at the same time inform you that I am well versed enough to carry out a discussion on the matter. I started out silly because I thought we were being silly here. You got serious, so I adapted and got serious.

Your question was: "For a guy that goes from Silly to serious how should I really respond to you anyways."

Guess what? That's the exact same question I asked myself when people got angry over my avatar. I'm sorry that my joke and further comments ruined this for you. I, too, won't be putting up a new dictator.

I'm not pissed off I just don't wanna go further because conversations like this usually always head into disaster on forums. Thats the only reason why I took it the way I did.

Vlad Tepes anyone? Ruler of Wallachia, otherwise known as Vlad the Impaler. He also served as the inspiration for Dracula. Most heinous, man.
