If they get a mid-tier pick (giving them a much needed 6th man) PLUS make a splash in free agency and filling in the gaps and with a healthy Rose they're potentially right back in the mix.
Really, they're just cutting dead weight.
The problem is that they aren't likely to have enough cap space to make this splash in free agency, even if they get nothing but expirings + long term picks for Deng.
Assuming the cap goes up to 62 mil, they'd have some 14 mil not counting Mirotic / 2014 picks. Add two picks (their own + Charlotte), add Mirotic (who's probably going to cost them midlevel). That leaves.. 4-5 mil in cap space?
Lets say they don't get Charlotte pick and Mirotic signs for less, still it won't be a lot.
There are free agents that make sense for them. If they could sign lets say Lance Stephenson, great. But that's probably out of their price range.
So then, what's the plan? Make more moves to clear cap space? Sign cheap mid level caliber role players? Replacing an all star with mid level talent doesn't seem like a great strategy for a contender.
If they move Deng, I think they have to get a very good long term piece / starter out of it. If that's not available, I think they are better off keeping Deng and trying to re-sign him.
