Blind Iowans can't drive but are granted permits to carry guns in public: reports - NY Daily News

Is arming the blind really a good idea?

Visually impaired people in Iowa are being granted permission to carry loaded firearms in public.

They may not be able to read the application form needed to acquire a permit but that apparently isn't stopping them from picking up pistols to aim and fire.

A legal loophole came to light earlier this month after the Des Moines Register reported on a trio of blind residents who have been granted permission since Jan. 1.

It's sparked a fierce debate on the issue, with some local sheriffs granting permission and others denying it.

Some are now calling for the law to be changed so the legally blind are stopped from being able to shoot pistols and guns.

"If you see nothing but a blurry mass in front of you, then I would say you probably shouldn't be shooting something," Delaware County Sheriff John LeClere told the Register.

But others believe that the blind can be trained in how to use firearms and that to stop them from doing so would be discriminatory.

"If sheriffs spent more time trying to keep guns out of criminals' hands and not people with disabilities, their time would be more productive," said Counters Cedar County Sheriff Warren Wethington, whose daughter is legally blind.
