All he had to do was hold the ball after receiving the pass from Jose and he had Utah firmly by the balls. Just hold and wait; throw in a couple fakes with 4 seconds left; make a shot or make a pass for a wide open shot - game over. Instead we got the whirly dirly nonsense.
But I still love him - he just needs to mature still.
The nice thing was that he showed a lot of maturity through most of this game. The assists were wonderful. And they helped him score easier. The rebounds were nice too. Then he looked like he lost confidence in his teammates, and maybe a little in himself as well.
It's funny you say fantasy Kobe/MJ. He reminded me a fair bit of a year 3 or 4 VC to me. The VC that had a bounce in his step and could make scrubs look pretty good, but would maddeningly start over dribbling on the perimeter, letting defenses off the hook, and settling for bad shots, while letting games get away. The bad news is he isn't going to reach Vince's level beyond a faint shadow, but maybe the good news is that his shortcomings last night will not become commonplace soon enough, and not ever approach all the between the legs nonsense and fearful fadeaways. I have high hopes for him and Lowry working off of each other.
