Also he still will be getting paid 4 and 5 years from now, if he takes the 3 year max. He'll be 31 when that contract runs out, which plausibly still leaves him in line for another big deal and possibly making as much at 32 and 33 as in the UFA deal. So long term, he plausibly could make more taking the 3 year max, then signing another huge contract at 31.
He can't get a max contract by extending. He'd get paid less than 10M per year if he extended his current contract.
If he's smart, he'll go to free agency. If he stays it will be as a FA, not through extension.
