Deron Williams: I enjoy playing in Dallas

Howard or bust? If i was a nets fan i'd be worried....very worried.

DALLAS — Nets fans who worry that point guard Deron Williams might walk as a free agent this summer and sign with his hometown Dallas Mavericks won’t get any reassurance from Williams’ comments after the Nets’ practice Monday at Southern Methodist University.

“I always like playing here,” Williams said when asked about his thoughts on playing in Dallas’ American Airlines Center, where the Nets will take on the Mavericks tonight. “It’s probably my favorite (arena) to play in. I just enjoy playing here — I enjoy playing in front of my friends, family. It’s always good they get the chance to come and see me play.”

Williams could play in front of his family and friends 41 times a year if he signs with the Mavericks this summer, and Nets coach Avery Johnson admitted he realizes that is a very real possibility.

“For me personally, working for Mark Cuban, he’s a threat, okay?” said Johnson, who coached the Mavs 2005-2008. “I know the guy. So I think because of the success he’s had — and I know he got criticized a lot for ... all those years where he didn’t win a championship — but he’s had some really great success here that rivals any situation. So that’s a threat. And for us, we don’t make any assumptions until we get Deron signed on the dotted line.

“So the main thing is, we keep doing what we’re doing, Deron’s been a major part of what we’re doing behind the scenes,” Johnson said. “He’s been a major part of what we’re doing with the new Barclays Center. So we’re saying he’s doing all of that with the intent that he’s going to remain with us in the future.”

But the uncertainty remains, and Williams is not willing to do anything to clear anything up. It is assumed that if the Nets are successful in acquiring Howard, either in a trade before the March 15 deadline, or as a free agent July 1, Williams will re-sign with the Nets after he opts out of the final year of his deal to become an unrestricted free agent. If the Nets don’t get Howard, well, that’s where it gets dicey. Most people assume in that case Williams would bolt the Nets and likely sign with the Mavericks, who are trying to clear out salary cap room to be able to offer near-max deals to both Williams and Howard.
