He was heavily scrutinized because he refused to stand up whenever "God Bless America" was playing in ballparks because he was fervently against the Iraq war. It bears in mind that players aren't simply sheep and have their own opinions s well. I thought it was a very courageous thing that he did. Almost a decade later, no one has a good thing to say about that war.
this is also a very strong point. employers really shouldn't have the right to compel their employees to support any political stance.
