i don't see how your example of what rick said to hershel applies. when he said it, he was fighting to stay on the farm opposed to being sent back on the road.
How so? Seems like everyone in the party would have been happy to stay there... provided the walkers were put down.
I'd expect them to stay at the farm when the series resumes unless it suddenly proves to be "unsafe".
I'd imagine that SOMETHING'S going to happen to spur them to move on though... or the show would turn into "Little House on the Prairie".
