It's tough to fill spots with FAs when we're not sure which of our young players will become solid starters.
I think that big free agency acquisitions are a few years away still. We need to get an idea of what guys like Bayless, JJ really bring to the table. We need to see DD and Ed Davis mature a little more, and we need to see if Ed Davis can add some bulk and avoid becoming injury prone. Also, this year's draft pick will need to be brought along too.
I think that the Chicago model makes a lot of sense - bring along your young talent, and when they start winning games and being a solid playoff team, add some FAs to turn the team into a championship contender.
I hope the organization has the patience to pull that off.
