I like to compare us to Australia. A country that's pretty similar to Canada in terms of social structurem population, etc. I gather their citizens are taxed similarilly.

Back in the 1980's Canada was ahead of Australia in terms in international sports. yes - even summer sports. Australia wasn't happy with the way things were being run. Guess what they did? They heavily re-structured. and guess what the result was? Australian athletes are now kicking ass.
Same in soccer. They essentially started from scratch not that long ago completely revamping their soccer program. what happened? Australia qualified for the world cup and have a good soccer program in place.

Jeez. You'd think we could learn a few things from them.
I was under the impression Australia significantly increased funding as well though.

I mean, yes, Canadian sports outside of hockey are mismanaged, and the whole athletic system does need an overhaul, but the funding isn't exactly phenomenal. I was told China spends an average of $6 million per gold medal or something like that...how the hell are we supposed to compete with that?

And don't get me wrong, I strongly support any plan to improve our athletic system without increasing funding, because I personally don't think Olympic medals are important enough to be spending that much money on. But I'm sure alot of athletes that train while having families and jobs would disagree. One of the guys I live with is a member of the Canadian Snowboarding team and receives funding to train for the upcoming 2010 Olympics. For him, as a college student who's tuition has already been taken care of, it's plenty of cash. For an adult with a family, a mortgage, etc. it's just not that much.

Personally, I think it's great that these people devote their lives to athletic excellence, often while maintaining jobs that are more than enough work and stress for most people (and by most people I mean me ) The fact that some of these people are even competing in the Olympics is damned impressive.

But if we're going to complain about a lack of medals, we do have to acknowledge that funding is an issue. Far from the only issue, and probably not even the most important issue, but an issue nonetheless.

To provide a counter to my own point however, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are currently above Canada in the medal standings. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that their funding likely isn't top notch.

So while a lack of funding may be hurting our athletic program as a whole, it sure as hell isn't a legitimate explanation for 0 medals.
