Homer takes over Spain

By Amber Dowling

‘Simpsons’ character found on Spanish Euro
We’re not sure whether this is a joke, a continuous quest by Matt Groening to take over the world or one of those serendipitous moments, but Homer Simpson has been found on the face of a Euro in Spain.

Now for those Simpsons fans who are about to pull on their boots and run to their local money exchange for their own Euro, simmer down for a second.

The coin is one-of-a-kind, and randomly showed up in Aviles, Spain, in a sweetshop. Mr. Doh himself was on it instead of the country’s king, Juan Carlos.

The shop owner, Jose Martinez, was counting change when he came across the beer-guzzling TV dad on the coin, and told Reuters he’s already been offered 20 Euros for it.

“The coin must have been done by a professional, the work is impressive,” he said.

King Juan Carlos has been the reigning king of Spain for more than 30 years. The 70-year-old replaced dictator General Franco on the back of the coins when the monarchy was restored in 1975.

Conversely, Homer Simpson has been the reigning TV dad on Fox for 20 years, and his face has been on dolls, hats, boxer shorts, bobbleheads, alarm clocks, slippers and video games. In addition to holding down his job as safety inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, he has also worked as an astronaut, a monorail conductor, a snowplow driver, a carnie and a clown impersonator.

Homer Simpson is voiced by Dan Castellaneta, who will be paid $400,000 U.S. per episode for Season 20.
