The chances of us picking up a big name player a pretty low for one reason.
The top players right now: LeBron, Wade, Paul, Howard are all American. The only team in the league which is not American is obviously the Raptors. Those big name players previously mentioned will never voluntarily choose to play for the Raptors
because playing for Canada would seem like some sort of treason to them.
The reason we got Carter
was only because we drafted them. Once they were in Toronto they loved it, don't get me wrong... But the thought of playing in Canada is what initially scares the big name American players off. Unless we are already a surefire contender, free agents like those aren't going to sign with us.
The best hope for Toronto is to go after American players who have international experience. Players such as Brandon Jennings (Who played in Europe) and Kobe Bryant (Who grew up in Italy) understand that they can still be proud of their own country even if they play somewhere else.
