Talking Happy Birthday CB4

Maybe the biggest star in town, Raptors forward Chris Bosh, turns 25 on March 24 and there's a big bash planned for tonight downtown. And like all big bashes, music will play a big part in the festivities. Here's a transcript of a conversation about his taste in music:

What kind of music do you like?

Hip-hop, R'n'B and a little bit of rock.

How did those choices come about?

Really just where I grew up (Dallas), and the rock that's kind of something I picked up – rock and pop, a little bit mainstream music; just being out here and just wanting something, a different sound.

What kind of rock bands?

I like Coldplay. I like, I don't know many; I just know the music. Coldplay is pretty cool.

Kanye West. He's my favourite.

I'm not much of an R'n'B fanatic. I listen to it, I really like listening to it, but I try to keep it mixed up.

Do you go to clubs specifically to listen to music?

If I know the DJ, if I'm familiar with the guy, I'll go to hear the music. If I know it's this other DJ, I'm like "I'm not going," but if I'm familiar with the guy, it's like, `he's my man, I'm going.'"

How would you characterize the music scene here in Toronto?

Diverse. You could be in the same place listening to hip-hop, then techno, then reggae. They're all over the place and everybody's really familiar with the music so it's interesting.

Will you help plan music for Sunday?

Oh yeah, they've got to ask me. I'll go right up there and I'll be like, `no, change that.'

Song you'll insist on?

"The Good Life" by Kanye West and T-Pain.

You grew up in Texas, isn't there country and western in you?

I know some country songs, but the old-school country, not the new contemporary stuff. I'm talking about the old stuff where the dog died and his wife left him and the tractor don't work. That's what I want to hear.

Were you a big music fan growing up?

I really didn't really like it too much growing up because I didn't like listening to, like, all the old-school people ...but now I like it – it was jazz and stuff. When I got to high school and started to buy it myself, you have to be a fan of what you buy, right? That's when I got into it.

Bosh's party is at Maro, 137 Liberty Ave.; see chris-bosh.com for details.
