Pietrus has a lot more upside than Kapono, in my opinion. He has the athleticism and skill to make his own shot, while also being a part of a complete team offensive game.
I think Colangelo signed Kapono because he believed that was the type of player that would work. I think he knew exactly the skill-set JK brought to the Raptors, and he over-paid for a player who is very one-dimensional, thinking that his skills would be useful. Unfortunately, the team needs athleticism, skill, and defense a lot more than it needs another shooter.
If Kapono were in a place like Orlando where he got wide-open looks all day (or like in Miami, where he got wide-open looks all day), it might actually work. Sadly, that's not TO....
